A suspicious item discovered in a house in Ulverston has led to 53 homes being evacuated and a major incident being declared. Cumbria Constabulary identified the item in the Steel Street area on Wednesday evening, leading to a 100m cordon being put in place and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team carrying out an assessment. A 46-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and is in police custody. Police discovered the item following concerns for the welfare of a male on Steel Street.
Westmorland and Furness Council opened the Ulverston leisure centre as a reception centre for those who have been forced to evacuate their homes. Ch Supt Mick Bird urged people to stay away from the affected area and said that the bomb disposal unit’s work could take a number of hours. He added that residents would be allowed back into their homes as soon as it is safe to do so. Motorists are being asked to keep away from North Lonsdale Road, between Sir John Barrow Way and Steel Street, as it remains closed
