A learner driver who refused to give up has been hailed for their determination after passing their theory test following 59 attempts. The unnamed driver spent £1,380 and 60 gruelling hours before finally obtaining a pass in the exam carried out at a test centre located in Redditch. The previous top individual test record came from a disobedient driver from Hull who failed 57 times, closely followed by learners from Guildford and Tunbridge Wells who had failed 55 and 53 times, respectively.
The demanding test, which costs £23 per attempt, lasts one hour and includes 50 multiple-choice questions. A pass requires a score of at least 43 correct answers. Following this, learners must ace a second part thought of as “the hazard perception” test, which contains 14 clips of potential driving situations. Department of Transport statistics indicate that as of 2022-2023, theory test pass rates had slipped to 44% — a considerable fall from the 65% pass rate in 2007-2008.
Nevertheless, Camilla Benitz, Managing Director of AA Driving School, believes that each learner must understand the importance of preparing for the theory test because the exam is trickier than it appears. Revision indeed is key to success, according to the AA. Notably, the AA Driving School introduced a revision app aimed at assisting learners in preparing for the test.
Overall, an official from the British Motoring Association (AA) reflected positively on the story, stating that although nerves are always present, they were impressed by the learner’s dedication to passing the test. However, while getting behind the wheel is the ultimate goal, one should never underestimate the importance of passing the theory; stated Benitz. It is worth remembering that passing the theory test is required in the UK before learners can book a practical driving test
