Liam Slade, 33, was driving on the M4 motorway near Bristol in July 2021 when he crashed into another car, killing Saado Hussein, 58, and Suad Ahmed, 68. After the collision, Slade fled the scene. The true speed of his car at the time of the crash was found to be 119mph.
In a victim statement, the families of the victims said their lives had been “changed forever.” Fatima Hudoon, daughter of Saado Hussein, said the news was “the most awful news no one ever expects.” The court was told that Slade had a criminal record with 30 previous convictions.
At sentencing, Judge William Hart said the tragedy was “too vividly apparent.” Slade was given an extended sentence of 19 years and eight months, with five years on licence. Defending Slade, Clare Wilks apologised on his behalf to the victims’ families and read out a letter from him expressing further remorse to them
