Snow and ice warnings issued for parts of UK

The UK is bracing itself for a wave of snow and ice as wintry showers are set to sweep across parts of the country. The Met Office has warned of potentially “hazardous conditions” overnight from Tuesday into Wednesday morning, affecting areas including central and south west Scotland, north east England and Yorkshire. In addition, some parts of London and south east England could see snow on Thursday. With temperatures dropping to as low as -6C degrees, untreated surfaces may become icy, and snow is expected to accumulate over higher ground. A yellow warning for snow and ice will remain in place for parts of Scotland and north east England until Thursday.

The cold weather is coming from Scandinavia, where near-record cold November weather is being experienced. Wintry showers are forming in the North Sea and are expected to reach eastern parts of the UK. The cold spell is likely to continue into next week, with maximum temperatures expected to be around 2C to 6C, and possibly below freezing in parts of Scotland and northern England.

Over the weekend, most of the UK saw temperatures dropping below freezing, with the coldest recorded temperature this autumn being -7.7C in Shap, Cumbria, on Saturday morning. While there is potential for snowfall in London and south east England later this week, it is not anticipated to settle or cause widespread disruption. The UK Health Security Agency has also issued a yellow cold-health alert covering northern regions of England, which will run through the week.
