A large-scale disorder in Auchinleck led to riot police officers being attacked by a hostile crowd. The incident occurred on the evening of Saturday, November 25th. One officer required hospital treatment after being struck by a firework as officers in helmets and with shields attempted to disperse the unruly crowd. Video footage of the incident was shared widely on social media.
Police Scotland has described the attacks as “completely unacceptable” and has launched an investigation into the events of the evening. Det Insp Louise White of Ayrshire Division has announced that officers were called to reports of a crowd gathered in Old Avenue. When the crowd refused to move on and became hostile, public order officers attended. One officer was hit by a firework and required hospital treatment.
Police officers have a responsibility to ensure the safety of all involved in these types of incidents. Although the crowd has now dispersed, investigations are ongoing to apprehend those responsible and ensure they are dealt with appropriately, including the implementation of any available video footage.
