Some residents were left without water and power, and roads had to be cordoned off after the incident eroded parts of the dune and cliff. Pascal Rose, who had to abandon her Mini car, expressed concern for vulnerable people in the area, saying: “Now we’ve got no road; we’ve got nothing. We are completely cut off”. Michael David Szawlytko, a resident of 10 years, had to cut through their garden to get to his home after the road collapsed.
Simon Measures, chair of the Save Hemsby Coastline group, said there had been no warning about the scale of the erosion and many residents had not believed it could happen so quickly. The Hemsby Lifeboat crew are thought to have played a key role in moving people out of danger after police closed off several roads. Jordan, a local resident, described himself as “devastated” after witnessing the damage.
Hemsby Lifeboat posted on its Facebook page, warning people not to go near the cliff, dunes or beach, calling it “too dangerous”. The group said 200m of road had fallen onto the beach after the erosion that had also led to fallen power lines and left cars stranded on The Marrams, which runs parallel to the cliff
