Dublin stabbing: Second child discharged from hospital

Among the child victims of the knife attack outside a primary school in Dublin on Thursday, another one has been discharged from the hospital. A total of three children and a school care assistant were hurt in the attack, which was followed by hours of rioting across the city. A six-year-old girl who sustained head injuries was discharged, whilst a boy of five left hospital on Friday. A five-year-old girl and the teaching assistant in her 30s remain in hospital in critical condition. Floral tributes are being left for the victims near the Gaelscoil Cholaiste Mhuire primary school in Dublin.

The attack occurred on Parnell Street, and so far the police have made no arrests in connection with the incident, but they are not looking for anyone other than one suspect, a man in his 40s, who is presently in hospital. However, there have been 48 arrests since the rioting began, which involved the arson of cars and looting of shops. Police are sifting through 6,000 hours of CCTV riot footage. The Irish Justice Minister Helen McEntee stated that the most riot police in Irish history have been deployed.

Addressing the rioting on Thursday, Garda Commissioner Drew Harris blamed a “lunatic, hooligan faction driven by a far-right ideology”. A small demonstration centred on immigration was held without incident on O’Connell Street, but gardaí made several arrests after sporadic altercations. Dublin city remained relaxed on Saturday, with a heavy police presence visible throughout the centre. Two large sporting events planned for Saturday were scheduled to go ahead.

The attack is thought to have been carried out by an Irish citizen who has lived in the country for 20 years, according to sources cited by the BBC. Irish President Michael D Higgins criticised the violence on Thursday night: “It
deserves condemnation by all those who believe in the rule of law and democracy.
