S4C chief executive Sian Doyle is sacked following review

Sian Doyle, the current CEO of S4C, was fired after an investigation into allegations that the Welsh broadcaster has a “toxic culture.” The company made the announcement following several claims of bullying made to the Bectu union by its employees, which surfaced in an anonymous email sent earlier this year.

The letter described S4C’s internal environment as one of “fear” due to the “aggressive and confrontational” behavior of executives towards staff. While acknowledging employee concerns, Sian Doyle also suggested that using the term “bullying” was frequent and unnecessary.

The S4C Authority, which oversees the public broadcaster, released a statement saying, “For us to begin to make improvements, we need to make some changes immediately.” It further added that the decision to remove Ms. Doyle was difficult but unanimous, and that the evidence provided was deeply troubling, requiring action from the company to secure change.

S4C confirmed it would begin the process of appointing a new CEO and also said it would publish a report detailing the nature of the evidence received during the fact-finding process. Welsh Conservative Shadow Minister for Culture, Tourism, and Sport, Tom Giffard, expressed hope that following the review and decisive action taken, S4C can begin to heal, move on, and draw a line under the issue
