​Over 4,000 musicians sign letter demanding ceasefire in Gaza

More than 5,000 artists from around the world have signed an open letter demanding a ceasefire in Gaza and humanitarian aid for the Palestinian people in the area who are living under siege. The letter was initiated by Musicians for Palestine and published last Thursday, November 16. It calls for an “immediate ceasefire and humanitarian aid in Gaza and an end to the siege.” It then goes on to say, “The day after, our vision of a just and peaceful future for all must be our most urgent task. We urge everyone who shares that vision to join us.”

The list of signatories includes international stars including Kid Cudi, Primal Scream, Yusuf Cat Stevens, Kali Uchis, Lucy Dacus as well as DJ’s such as Brian Eno, DJ Q, rRoxymore, Ben UFO, Shanti Celeste, Kode9, Loraine James, and Lee Gamble. The letter highlights the pressing need for aid in Gaza and refers to the area as a “textbook case of genocide.” It quotes Israeli Scholar of Genocide, Raz Segal, and UN Human Rights official, Craig Mokhiber.

Musicians for Palestine were inspired by Artists Against Apartheid and are refusing to let their music be used to whitewash oppression and human rights violations anywhere. The open letter concludes with a plea for anyone who believes in a just and peaceful future to join the call for a ceasefire and help to end the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The full list of names of signatures from across the music industry can be found on the Musicians for Palestine website. The campaign aims to encourage people to aid the crisis, protest, fundraise and donate to help in any way they can. Recently, Manchester to Palestine, a collection of DJs and musicians from Manchester released a compilation as a way of fundraising for people in Gaza.
