Former Top Gear host James May believes that the show’s format needs to be reworked following the BBC’s decision to “rest the series.” According to May, the topic of cars has not been this interesting since the car was invented. May co-hosted Top Gear with Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond before all three left after Clarkson punched a producer in 2015. They then immediately signed on for The Grand Tour, a new motoring show on Amazon Prime Video. May said that since their departure from Top Gear, the show has continued with a very similar format and framework.
May does not know what the new format should look like, but he believes there must be another way of presenting a car show. He made these comments in an interview with the BBC’s Today Podcast, which aired on Radio 4 on Wednesday. May, Hammond, and Clarkson developed the format of Top Gear, which relied on the chemistry between the three presenters, with car reviews combined with celebrity guests and other features.
May thinks the show’s approach has become tired over the years, and said it’s time for a new format and approach to exploring such an interesting topic. Flintoff was badly injured in an accident during filming, and the show was put on pause as a result. May believes that a new approach is necessary, as he thinks Top Gear or something like it will return. The BBC said it had “decided to rest the UK show,” but that it remains committed to Freddie, Chris, and Paddy, who have been “at the heart of the show’s renaissance.”
May, Hammond, and Clarkson have all moved on since leaving Top Gear, with May hosting his own travel and cookery programmes for Amazon in addition to The Grand Tour. Clarkson also hosts Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? while Hammond presents his own series on Amazon. May was irritated by suggestions that he, Hammond, and Clarkson could return to the show, as he believes it would be inappropriate given Flintoff’s injury
