A man who recorded himself drinking and driving shortly before causing a fatal crash has been handed a prison sentence. Anton Hull, aged 21, admitted causing the death of Sarah Baker after colliding with her car on the way to Somerset in August 2022. Ms. Baker had just completed her master’s degree and was on her way to her first home. She died at the scene.

Mr. Hull, who had been drinking rum and lager, had been refused service in a pub in the hours leading up to the collision. Despite this, he decided to drive and was spotted consuming alcohol at the wheel on one of the videos found in his possession. Tests revealed that he was driving while nearly two times over the legal limit.

Members of the public who came across the crash scene reported that Mr. Hull appeared to be highly inebriated. Despite this, he refused to provide police with his mobile phone passcode, which, upon gaining access, investigators discovered contained videos of him committing the crime.

In a hearing that took place in October, Hull pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving. On Friday, he was sentenced to six years in prison and a nine-year driving ban.

The investigating officer, Dai Nicholas, described the incident as a “catastrophic conscious decision” and Ms. Baker’s passing as “a needless tragedy.” Judge Edward Burgess, who presided over the case, condemned Hull’s actions and called the crash an enormous loss. Ms. Baker’s family stated that it had left an irreparable hole in their lives
