An emu named Rodney has been reunited with his family after escaping from their home in Loose, Kent. The flightless bird was captured on doorbell footage at a neighbour’s property and the police were alerted. Officers then located the six-month-old emu in a nearby residential street close to its home. Upon being reunited with the bird, owner Sarah Stribbling-Williams said she was “delighted” to have Rodney back home again.
Rodney escaped after one of Mrs Stribbling-Williams’ children let him out in the garden by mistake. She was not aware that he had gone missing because she thought he was in his stable. However, a man approached her and said that she had lost her emu. The bird had wandered down a footpath and ended up in a neighbour’s front garden.
“He’s a very friendly and tame member of the family,” said Mrs Stribbling-Williams. “He often comes in our house and if outside he will come and knock on the kitchen window for some treats.” Rodney spends his time with the family’s seven children and their other animals, which includes dogs, cats, horses and chickens. He can often be found running around the garden with the dogs.
Mrs Stribbling-Williams was not surprised that Rodney was captured on doorbell footage trying to get into the home of pensioner Maureen Roberts. Mrs Roberts said, “I didn’t know the emu was on the loose in my garden until I saw the footage on my phone. I just didn’t believe it until I heard the tapping noise outside on the door.”
The emu’s escape and subsequent recapture made headlines across the UK. The unusual sight of the large bird walking through residential streets is not something that locals are accustomed to seeing. Fortunately, this story has a happy ending, and it seems that Rodney is pleased to be back home with his human and animal family
