Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is investigating a mysterious humming noise that has been reported in different parts of Omagh in Northern Ireland in recent weeks. The council is yet to trace the source of the night-time noise, which has been described as a “persistent buzz or hum” distinct from common urban sounds, such as traffic. People who are affected by the noise have reported that they were unable to sleep, and it was imperative for the council to investigate this problem thoroughly.
Alliance Party councillor, Stephen Donnelly, first heard about the mystery noise in the Tamlaght Road area of Omagh in late October when he was contacted by the residents. Since then, reports have spread to other parts of the town. Donnelly is concerned some residents are suffering from noise pollution and serious problems. However, it has been challenging for the council to trace the source of the noise because it has been reported across a wide area of the town, says a council spokesperson.
The council is considering using specialist equipment such as noise meters or hiring a specialist company to assist in identifying the source of the noise. This type of phenomenon worldwide is widely known as “the Hum,” and it has been reported across the globe over the past five decades, including in the United Kingdom, North America, and Australia. This humming noise can be generated by different sources such as farm or factory machinery, while some attribute it to conspiracy theories such as flying saucers.
Despite every effort by the council officials, tracing the exact source of the noise has been a challenge due to its wide range, and they are yet to achieve success. In conclusion, it is vital to identify the source of the noise and limit its impact on the residents’ sleep and general health
