Philip Young ‘told rape accused his wife would pretend to sleep’

A 62-year-old man, Richard Wilkins, has testified at Winchester Crown Court concerning allegations of rape tied to a 2016 incident. Wilkins, who worked as a taxi driver in Swindon at the time, responded to an online advertisement he believed was placed by a married couple seeking a third partner for sexual activity. During his testimony, he stated that he was informed by the husband, Philip Young, that the woman, Joanne Young, would “pretend to be asleep” during the encounter.

Wilkins is among four men currently on trial accused of committing sexual offences against Joanne Young, who has waived her right to anonymity. The other defendants are Norman Macksoni, 48, Connor Sanderson-Doyle, 32, and Mohammed Hassan, 38. All four men deny the charges. Wilkins specifically has pleaded not guilty to one count of rape and one of assault by penetration. He explained that after answering what he believed was a joint online personal ad, he was told to “come in, have sex and leave.” He further recalled being told that Joanne might be intoxicated during the encounter, with her husband describing that she would “pretend to sleep” and might respond if stimulated.

The case reveals a disturbing history where Philip Young had placed approximately 20 adverts on Craigslist over a period inviting men to engage sexually with his wife. Other platforms used by Young included Grindr and Fab Swingers. One such advert explicitly mentioned the need to remain anonymous and avoid revealing any identity through voice, describing the act as “quietly use her body.” Investigators launched their inquiry after police were alerted in 2023 to Young’s uploading of extreme pornographic imagery. Searches also uncovered nearly 500 images of Joanne in varying states of undress, many taken without her knowledge or consent.

Philip Young has admitted to a series of serious offences against Joanne, including rape, assault by penetration, administering a substance with intent, voyeurism, and various charges related to indecent and prohibited images of children. Additionally, Dean Hamilton, 47, of Street, Somerset, has admitted to charges of assault by penetration, sexual assault, and rape. Sentencing for Young and Hamilton is expected to take place after the current trial involving Wilkins and the other three men concludes. The proceedings into this distressing case are ongoing
