James Blunt was one of the standout characters on this year’s Celebrity Traitors, making it all the way to the final episode despite openly admitting that he tried his hardest to be eliminated early. Known for his quirky 1980s leisurewear, eccentric conspiracy theories, and methodical, military-inspired approach to challenges, Blunt won over viewers with his distinctive style. At the round table discussions, he played a prominent role alongside actor Michael Sheen, whom he affectionately compared to a “mature labrador” as they worked together to identify the traitors, while he saw himself as the more energetic “yapping terrier.” However, behind the scenes, Blunt’s strategy was quite different—he intentionally tried to avoid becoming a target.
Blunt explained to the BBC that since all contestants received the same payment irrespective of how long they stayed, he preferred to exit early. “I was trying to… get the hell out of dodge. But no-one was killing me and no-one was banishing me!” he admitted. While he recognized that outspoken personalities tend to be eliminated quickly, Blunt found keeping a low profile tedious. Instead, he entertained himself by concocting wild theories and encouraging a no-holds-barred approach. “I was telling everyone, ‘It doesn’t matter [who goes], just kill them all!’ It’s fine, as long as you’re apologetic when you get it wrong.”
In fact, Blunt’s persistent suspicion eventually led to a major turning point in the show’s penultimate episode. After numerous failed guesses, he and Sheen began to suspect that the quieter participants were more likely to be traitors. This shift in focus resulted in comedian James Acaster being grilled intensely over a mysterious “murder in plain sight.” Under pressure, Acaster confessed, revealing he had become a traitor rather unintentionally. Blunt hinted that the full depth of the interrogation wasn’t shown on screen—Acaster was closely questioned about inconsistencies involving a perfume bottle tied to the incident. “He didn’t fall on his sword. That’s what you saw, that’s what you feel, but he didn’t. … We really, really got him,” said Blunt.
Beyond the game itself, Blunt reflected on the impact of editing on viewers’ understanding of the series. With many hours of footage condensed into the episodes, not all moments made the broadcast, sometimes leaving audiences unaware of what truly transpired. Despite this, some memorable highlights, such as actress Jerry Hall’s playful remarks to him, did make the final cut. Blunt was eventually voted out during the closing stages of the show after comedian Romesh Ranganathan grew suspicious of a secret alliance between him and fellow traitor Maya Jama. Although surprised by the accusation, Blunt accepted the outcome with good spirit: “The ending was perfect. It had all the twists and turns. I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.”
When asked why he participated in Celebrity Traitors if he wasn’t
