Russell Brand’s wife tells his rape trial he is ‘kind and a wonderful father’

Russell Brand’s wife, Laura Brand, gave testimony in his ongoing rape and sexual assault trial, describing her husband as “caring, kind and a wonderful father to our children.” Speaking at Southwark Crown Court in London, the 39-year-old told the jury that “the way he treats me is to know me,” adding, “I feel very seen by him… I love him very much.” Despite these assertions, the media personality faces serious allegations, including three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one charge of attempted indecent assault, all of which he denies.

During her evidence, Laura was questioned by the defence barrister about whether Brand respected her boundaries when she was not interested in being sexual with him. She responded with an emphatic “Yes absolutely.” Laura is the daughter of former golfer Bernard Gallacher and sister of presenter Kirsty Gallacher. She and Brand were married in 2017 and share three children. Laura recounted how they first met back in 2006 at the Edinburgh Festival, where Brand performed. Following his show, she introduced herself, and he subsequently contacted her the next day. She recalled their initial physical encounter, noting, “He might have wanted to have sex but I didn’t want to.”

Laura shared insights into their early relationship, revealing she knew Brand “liked women” before they met and became aware during their dating period that he was involved with others. “I wasn’t interested in having a relationship with him if he was sleeping with other people,” she stated. Although both exchanged declarations of love, Laura acknowledged that monogamy had proven challenging for Brand. She also maintained contact with him while he was married to singer Katy Perry from 2010 to 2012 and later reunited with him in 2015. When asked about his promiscuous behavior during their time apart, Laura said, “I was very aware of it. I could read about it regularly in the papers, so I was aware of it and he also told me.” She described their current marriage as “very honest, frank, and clear,” emphasizing openness as a cornerstone of their relationship.

The charges against Brand stem from allegations made by six women concerning incidents spanning a decade from 1999 to 2009. Throughout the trial, Brand has exhibited little visible emotion, though he was seen smiling during parts of Laura’s testimony and laughed when she mentioned their wide circle of friends and colleagues. Laura’s testimony followed Brand’s own appearance in the witness box the previous day. He spoke candidly about the “devastating” impact that the accusations had on his friendships and professional relationships, describing how people would avoid him “with a bargepole.” He admitted to a promiscuous past but stressed that sexual consent is “fundamental, essential, necessary and indeed in many ways more important than sex itself.”

Additionally, the court heard statements from two of Brand’s former girlfriends. Elia Alvarez Diaz, who lived with Brand from 1998 to 1999, described him as “gentle” and “loving,” calling him “highly persuasive… a complex character” and “exciting to be with.” She noted that when she said no, Brand accepted her refusal. Their relationship ended due to his repeated infidelity. Amanda Alguero Alejos also testified that Brand repeatedly cheated on her, stating, “He was undoubtedly promiscuous, never in front of me and never when I was around. That was not what mattered to me at the time.” She recalled that women were often “circling” Brand like “birds,” even when they were out together. The trial is ongoing, and the jury is expected to begin deliberations soon
