Jury shown CCTV of Huntingdon train staff using frying pan in defence

CCTV footage presented at Cambridge Crown Court has captured a dramatic moment when Samir Zitouni, a member of train staff, used a frying pan to confront a man accused of trying to kill ten passengers during a stabbing spree on a train traveling from Doncaster to King’s Cross. Prosecutor Christopher Paxton KC praised Zitouni for demonstrating “sheer courage and bravery in seeking to save lives and defend others” during the violent attack. The video showed Zitouni striking Anthony Williams just before the train made an emergency stop at Huntingdon railway station on November 1 of the previous year.

Williams, 33, from Langford Road in Peterborough, faces 14 counts of attempted murder. These include violent episodes occurring not only on the train but also in locations in Peterborough and London the day before. The jury observed images of Williams onboard the train as well as footage displaying passengers fleeing the scene. Zitouni, despite being severely injured and described by Paxton as wearing a “blood-soaked shirt,” appeared to be among the last to leave the train amidst the chaos.

Evidence revealed that the attack on Zitouni was both “prolonged, persistent and brutal,” leaving him with life-threatening injuries including punctured lungs. He required multiple blood transfusions, the insertion of chest drains, and ventilator support. The prosecutor detailed how Zitouni fell between the train and the platform during the incident but remained defiant, telling the attacker, “we love you, we can help you.” The trial further heard testimonies about the intense hand-to-hand fights that took place, with victims reportedly “literally fighting for their lives.”

One passenger, Sachin Balakrishnan, suffered severe stab wounds to his forearm and chest, narrowly avoiding a fatal injury to his heart. Another traveler, Scott Green, was reportedly saved when his dog, Poppy, frightened off Williams after repeated stabbing attempts. The court was informed of additional victims, including 73-year-old David Presland, who was stabbed in the back while on his knees and later helped by another victim identified as Kevin Deely. Paxton summarized the horrific events by stating that “in about five minutes,” Williams stabbed 10 men on the train and was also linked to assaults in Peterborough shortly before the attack. The trial remains ongoing
