Ashlea Simon, formerly the co-leader of the far-right Britain First party, has revealed that she was detained as part of an inquiry into attacks targeting houses in multiple occupation (HMOs). In a statement posted on X, Simon explained that her arrest took place at Manchester Airport after she returned from a family holiday.
According to Greater Manchester Police (GMP), the 37-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to cause criminal damage. This follows a series of incidents where several HMOs across the Greater Manchester area were vandalised. Simon, who maintains she “hasn’t committed a crime in her life,” was contacted for comment by the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS).
Simon indicated in her social media post that she believes her arrest is connected to videos she has been posting since July. In these recordings, she identifies multiple HMOs located in her hometown of Walkden, Salford. In one recent video, she also mentioned that her home had been “raided” by police during her absence on holiday and that she was aware of an outstanding “arrest warrant.” Since leaving Britain First two years ago, Simon has become the leader of an activism group focused on “pro-English” issues.
Police investigations into vandalism and damage to properties have intensified across Salford, Tameside, and Stockport, with approximately 50 related incidents being examined. Vandals have not only targeted HMOs but also family homes and vehicles; in one particularly notable case, a pig’s head was left outside a residence. Authorities have arrested five men and a 13-year-old boy on suspicion of criminal damage and conspiracy. Chief Superintendent Marcus Noden stated, “officers suspect vulnerable people are being exploited and paid to damage buildings they believe are HMOs,” and added, “Some of those being exploited are believed to be children and this is just one line of enquiry that we are pursuing.
