Storm Boelo made our Blackpool wedding day special, couple say

Leigh and Paul Hutchinson experienced an unforgettable wedding day that coincided with Storm Boelo. Despite the disruptive weather and the last-minute alterations it caused, the couple felt the storm did not spoil their celebration—in fact, it enriched it. Originally, they had intended to surprise their guests with a celebratory glass of fizz at the top of Blackpool Tower, but the high winds forced the closure of the venue’s upper section.

In response, the venue staff quickly adapted by setting up a private bar on the Tower Ballroom’s upper balcony and later clearing the dance floor so the newlyweds could enjoy their first dance in this iconic setting. “They did something really special for us,” Leigh recalled. “It made the day so much more than we could have ever imagined.”

Leigh and Paul first met ten years ago and had envisioned a simple, intimate wedding in the chapel next to The Beach House, where their relationship began. Leigh reflected on their original plan: “It was just going to be us. A quick wedding and a meal with family afterwards. So it spiralled to say the least.” After the ceremony, the couple and their guests braved the storm, walking down the Prom. Leigh described the chaotic but memorable scene: “I don’t know how we made it! We caused quite a stir. I think there’s still a few brollies missing.”

The highlight of the day came when a guest suggested dancing in the Tower Ballroom. With the staff’s assistance, the floor was cleared, and the organ music began. “They played the organ and we had the most magical first dance,” Leigh said. Groom Paul joked about the grandeur of the moment, saying, “I was nervous dancing in front of 40 people, never mind hundreds I didn’t know, but it made the day.” Blackpool Tower’s general manager, Rob Smith, remarked on the occasion: “It was a special moment and one our team will never forget… Leigh and Paul are now part of its history. We wish them both all the very best for the future.
