A tragic incident involving a young software engineer who may have been unaware of his fatal fall from a balcony was detailed during an inquest. Kieran Hughes, aged 25, from Nant Gwynant in Gwynedd, passed away in the early hours of July 11, 2025, while vacationing in Malta alongside three friends. Maltese authorities conducted a post-mortem examination, which revealed a significant concentration of alcohol in Hughes’ bloodstream.
The inquest held at Caernarfon Coroner’s Court revealed no signs of involvement by any third parties. Coroner Elizabeth Dudley-Jones ultimately determined that Hughes’ death was accidental. Hughes’ father, Alan, expressed the deep and ongoing grief his family endures, describing it as “heartache all day, every day.” Meanwhile, friends remembered Hughes as a high achiever, labeling him “a legend and a genius.”
Details presented during the hearing showed that Hughes and his companions had been staying at the Cavalieri Art Hotel in St Julian’s, Malta. On the evening of July 10, they left the hotel around 7:00 pm BST and spent the night dining, visiting a casino, and consuming various alcoholic beverages including beer, cocktails, and limoncello. Around 4:15 am on July 11, a member of the public alerted hotel staff to a man lying outside, apparently unconscious and bleeding.
When police arrived, they found Hughes on the ground, lifeless and in a pool of blood. Officers then proceeded to room 603, situated above the site of his fall, where they attempted to rouse Osian Jones, Hughes’ friend and the individual sharing the room with him. Jones was heavily intoxicated and asleep, only waking around 6:30 am. The inquest concluded that no disorder or signs of struggle had occurred in the room, with CCTV footage showing Hughes and Jones returning together, supporting each other. There was no evidence of conflict or shouting between them before the fall.
The footage captured Hughes falling approximately 48 minutes after the two returned to their room. The autopsy indicated that his death resulted from multiple injuries caused by blunt force trauma sustained from the height of the fall. No defensive wounds were present, implying Hughes might not have been conscious of falling from the balcony. The coroner suggested that both men likely fell asleep, and in his severely intoxicated state, Hughes may have gone outside seeking fresh air or because he felt unwell.
Coroner Dudley-Jones described the loss as a “complete tragedy” and praised Hughes as “an amazing man.” She admitted that this particular inquest had been very emotional and difficult for her to manage. During the hearing, a statement from Hughes’ father was read, in which he shared the family’s frustrations and pain with the Maltese authorities, emphasizing the continuous sorrow they face daily
