Items recovered in search for missing fishing boat and crew

Items from a fishing vessel that went missing off the northern coast of the Isle of Lewis last week have been found as the search continues for the boat and two crew members. The vessel, named Kilda, disappeared on 13 October while carrying Norman “Tam” Murray, aged 40, and Murdo Morrison, aged 23.

Earlier, rescuers recovered the body of fellow crew member Douglas Craigie, aged 49, from the sea in the early hours following the disappearance. On Thursday, authorities announced that belongings linked to the boat had been discovered in a designated “area of interest” near the Port of Ness. This search effort was conducted by Police Scotland’s marine and dive unit in collaboration with partner agencies.

A Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) exclusion zone has been enforced for vessels and divers between the Butt of Lewis and Port of Ness, restricting access to the area. However, this zone is scheduled to be lifted at 23:59 on Thursday. Inspector Neil Taylor, the local area inspector for the Western Isles, described the search as a “complex operation” and emphasized the importance of allowing authorities time and space to carry out their work.

Inspector Taylor remarked, “Efforts are continuing to work with partners and we are doing everything we can to get answers. While the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) exclusion zone will be lifted tonight, we would urge people not to put themselves at any risk. Please do not attempt to carry out searches in areas which put you at risk of harm.” Meanwhile, a GoFundMe support campaign for the affected families has exceeded its initial target, raising over £148,000 out of a goal of £110,000
