Claims ‘stabbed’ Eleanor Barnfield tried to drive to hospital due to ambulance wait denied

Eleanor Barnfield, aged 47, tragically passed away in hospital following a car crash in Bridgend on Monday. Police discovered that she had sustained puncture wounds, which were unrelated to the collision itself. These injuries were reportedly the result of a stabbing incident prior to the crash. A 61-year-old man from Bridgend has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody as investigations continue.

The Welsh Ambulance Service responded promptly to the incident, arriving on the scene at Coity Road around 12:44 BST. Their response unit reached Eleanor within seven minutes, followed by two additional emergency ambulances at 13:07 and 13:13, providing further support. The service emphasized that rumors circulating online suggesting Eleanor had been driving herself to the hospital due to ambulance delays are false. They described these claims as “contradictory” and “factually untrue,” encouraging the public to refrain from speculation.

Advanced critical care was administered by the emergency medical retrieval and transfer team, which arrived via helicopter. Eleanor was then transported to hospital for further treatment. Meanwhile, South Wales Police carried out a “significant” operation at the Ger-y-Nant retirement housing complex near the crash site, resulting in the arrest of the suspect. Eleanor was an employee of Valleys to Coast, the housing association managing the Ger-y-Nant complex, which offers accommodation for people over 60 across 13 flats.

In a heartfelt family tribute, Eleanor was remembered as the “kindest, most loving, bravest person in the world” and described as a rock by her loved ones. Jo Oak, the chief executive of Valleys to Coast, expressed deep sorrow over Eleanor’s death, calling her a “much-valued member” of their team. Oak confirmed that the organisation is cooperating fully with the ongoing police investigation. Authorities have thanked the local community for their support and patience and have noted that there may be an increased police presence in the area as inquiries progress
