Civil servant who juggled five jobs ‘wasn’t thinking straight’

During the spring of 2023, Chowdhury held positions at several UK government bodies, including Defra, the UK Health Security Agency, the Food Standards Agency, the Department for Business and Trade, and the Home Office. Throughout this time, he was contracted for a staggering total of 183 hours per week, exceeding the total number of hours in an entire week. Remarkably, each of these roles came with a full-time salary, and it was noted that Chowdhury earned £11,000 for just one month of work in 2023.

Prosecutors allege that Chowdhury took advantage of the work-from-home arrangements that became widespread due to the Covid-19 pandemic as a way to conceal his multiple simultaneous jobs. They claim he also used sick leave from some employers to better manage the heavy workload. However, Chowdhury denied seeking out all these roles willingly, especially those at the Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC), the Department for Business and Trade, and the Home Office.

Addressing the court, Chowdhury explained, “I sent out a flurry of these applications. The offers for these jobs came all at once. I had discussions with my line managers saying that I did not want these jobs and explained my circumstances. These were all short term and probationary and my priority was to look after my mother.” He further revealed that in May and June 2022, his mother’s health significantly worsened, saying, “That overwhelmed me at the time. It just destroyed me.”

Chowdhury went on to describe his employment as a crucial source of support during a difficult period, calling the jobs his “lifeline at the time.” He explained, “They gave me a link to the outside world and were a distraction from what was going on in my personal life, looking after my mum at that time.” The prosecution maintains that Chowdhury was able to hide his overlapping work commitments by working remotely and that he misled his employers by presenting himself as the sole carer for his elderly mother, which he reportedly “exploited.” The trial is ongoing
