Significant enhancements are planned for County Road, one of Liverpool’s most familiar high streets, including the introduction of pocket parks, additional trees, murals, and various street improvements. These initiatives aim to revitalize the area by fostering a cleaner, greener, and more inviting atmosphere tailored for residents, visitors, and shoppers alike.
This investment programme was formulated following extensive consultation with local businesses, who emphasized the importance of a more attractive and comfortable environment to encourage visitors to linger and support trade. Early work began in July with the creation of new pocket parks at the intersections of Hale Road and Carisbrooke Road. These spaces now feature benches and plantings, designed to provide welcoming spots for people to gather and spend time outdoors.
In addition to the new greenery and seating, a vibrant mural has recently been completed at the Hale Road junction. Created by local artist Madeleine Pires in collaboration with community member and business owner Rachel Workman, the artwork symbolizes community resilience through the motif of buddleia flourishing in challenging conditions. Previously, Pires collaborated with dot-art and Culture Liverpool on the award-winning Flower Streets Murals Project in nearby Kirkdale. Further public art projects are planned to bring more color and vitality to County Road throughout the autumn and winter months.
Additional improvements include the planting of trees at the Arundel Street and Carisbrooke Road junction, as well as at Chirkdale Street. These efforts are supported by Section 106 developer contributions. Plans to enhance bin screening are also underway to improve the street’s appearance, encourage recycling, and combat fly-tipping. Meanwhile, the council will conduct a review of parking restrictions in response to business concerns about the shortage of legal short-stay parking spaces affecting customer access and trade. This will be part of a broader city-wide parking strategy. The entire project benefits from funding provided by the UK Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund, with oversight from the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority.
Cllr Nick Small, Cabinet Member for Growth and Economy, reflected on the improvements, stating, “County Road is an important local high street with a strong community spirit and proud local businesses. These improvements have been shaped by feedback from the people who know the area best and are about making County Road a cleaner, greener and more welcoming place to spend time. From new seating and planting to public art and tree planting, we’re investing in practical changes that will make a real difference to the look and feel of the area while supporting local businesses and encouraging pride in the neighbourhood.”
