Counter-terrorism authorities have re-arrested two men following an incident near RAF Fairford last month, according to police statements. The individuals, a 24-year-old British citizen and a 25-year-old dual UK-Iranian national, are currently detained on suspicion of aiding a foreign intelligence agency under Section 3 of the National Security Act 2023. Investigators have indicated that the inquiry is connected to Iran.
The alarm was raised in the early hours of 27 September when Gloucestershire Police received a report concerning three suspicious vehicles approaching the US airbase in Gloucestershire. This prompted the declaration of a major incident, resulting in the evacuation of numerous nearby residences. A total of seven men have been arrested in connection with the ongoing counter-terrorism operation.
Following the initial report, a bomb disposal team was dispatched to the location, where petrol was discovered in three vans near the base. Five suspects were taken into custody initially on charges relating to the Explosives Act, with these charges later broadened to suspicion of preparing terrorist acts. Despite the severity of the situation, police confirmed that no improvised explosive devices were found during their search.
The recent re-arrests include a 24-year-old man apprehended near the airbase on 27 September and a 25-year-old arrested on 1 October in Westminster under suspicion of terrorist preparation. The remaining five individuals, among them a 22-year-old British national arrested in Westminster on 6 October, continue to be held on police bail. Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, head of National Counter Terrorism Policing, emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and likely involves Iranian state actors. He stated, “This is very much a live investigation, and our evidence gathering continues, but at this time our position remains the same; we consider it highly likely that there is Iranian state involvement.” Taylor also highlighted the complexity and sensitivity of such security probes, noting the dedication of specialist teams working to unravel multiple strands of inquiry
