Harlow fire murder survivor fears he could die before case solved

The tragic deaths of a mother and her five children in a house fire are now classified as a cold case, according to information obtained by the BBC. In October 2012, Dr. Sabah Usmani and her five children—Hira, aged 12; Sohaib, 11; Muneeb, nine; Rayyan, six; and Maheen, three—lost their lives in a blaze at their home in Harlow.

Authorities have stated that there are currently no promising leads to follow but will remain open to evaluating any new evidence that may arise. The only survivor of the devastating event was the children’s father, Dr. Abdul Shakoor, who has expressed fears that he may not live to see the case resolved.

A cold case designation indicates that while the police consider the homicide thoroughly investigated, it remains unsolved. Detectives will not be engaging in daily active searches for new leads, but the case itself remains open. Dr. Shakoor has been informed that, barring any fresh information, Essex Police plan to review the investigation again in ten years’ time.

Reflecting on the situation, Shakoor described the news as “very disappointing.” He acknowledged the efforts of Essex Police, stating, “I know that Essex Police have done a really great job and I still feel that they would like to resolve this case as a top priority. It is the matter of the six lives lost, all innocent. In one night, everything was taken away from me.” He also voiced his uncertainty about his own future, saying, “Who knows in 10 years whether I will be here,” and added, “I don’t know whether I’ll be alive at that time.
