The BBC has announced that the long-standing home renovation series DIY SOS will take a break in 2027 due to the broadcaster’s ongoing financial savings efforts. Rather than continuing with new episodes, the show will be temporarily “rested” and replaced by a spin-off program that showcases highlights from previous series. This move comes amid reports, which have been denied by sources, that the show was being cancelled as part of budget cuts.
Hosted by Nick Knowles, DIY SOS has built a reputation for transforming the homes of families dealing with serious challenges such as illness, disability, bereavement, or significant structural damage. Since its debut in 1999, the program has become a staple on BBC One and iPlayer, currently airing its 35th series.
This decision aligns with the BBC’s broader plan to save £500 million over the next three years. In recent months, several popular programs including Blankety Blank, Celebrity Mastermind, and Live At The Apollo have also been cancelled as part of this effort.
A BBC spokesperson explained the changes, stating: “In light of the BBC’s savings challenges we have taken the decision to rest DIY SOS in 2027 and commission a new spin-off show instead from producers South Shore. DIY SOS Rebuilt My Life will revisit successes from the show’s past and expand the brand on the BBC in a more cost-effective way next year.
