During the court proceedings, the barrister described the nature of the offences as varied throughout the defendant’s career. She emphasized that despite the different identities and actions of the women involved, the defendant’s behaviour remained consistent. According to her, Brand demonstrated an insatiable and indiscriminate desire for sexual contact, showing no signs of deterrence. The prosecutor painted a picture of Brand as someone who could be charming, funny, and likable when it suited him, especially when seeking something in return. However, she also portrayed him as demanding, entitled, and possessing a significant sexual appetite, with what she described as a childlike expectation that his desires be fulfilled. After incidents, Brand often appeared unaffected, sometimes leaving quickly or making excuses, and at other times acting as if nothing untoward had occurred.
On Wednesday, jurors were presented with detailed allegations involving multiple complainants. The first accuser recounted meeting Brand before his fame, in 1999, at a Labour Party conference fringe event. The prosecution alleged that Brand raped her; however, when questioned, he claimed no memory of the event or the woman’s name and denied any non-consensual conduct. The second complainant, then working for MTV, described an episode where Brand asked for the toilet’s location and, once inside, pressured her to accompany him in, despite her resistance. Her description included Brand’s desperate, wild-eyed plea, reflecting his persistence. The third accuser alleged that Brand orally raped her in a toilet after meeting her at a party in 2004. The prosecution detailed how he suddenly grabbed her breasts during their initial encounter, grinning oddly, before pulling her toward the toilets. She also recalled an incident where Brand exposed himself and urged her to perform oral sex, which she refused, with Brand seemingly accepting her denial.
Further allegations involved the fourth complainant, who testified that Brand shoved her against a wall at Capital Radio around 2004 or 2005, forcibly kissing her and groping her multiple times. She managed to push him away, but he reacted with a snigger, as though mocking the situation. The fifth woman met Brand during a 2009 performance at the Hammersmith Apollo. While their initial interaction was consensual, the prosecution said Brand later raped her anally. The woman described enduring years of self-blame, anxiety, and poor health. Text messages exchanged after encountering him the following summer revealed Brand expressing a desire to “push you further,” to which she replied that he had already treated her “like an animal.” Brand apologized in response. The sixth complainant accused Brand of sexual assault during a 2009 work assignment, claiming he demanded a massage and subsequently placed his head in her groin area.
Following these accounts, the prosecutor informed the court that Brand, when questioned by police in 2023, denied any involvement in non-consensual sexual behaviour. He asserted that the allegations had been fabricated or imagined, allegedly influenced by a defamatory documentary and related media coverage. The trial is ongoing and expected to last six weeks. Brand attended the proceedings accompanied by his wife, Laura. Rising to fame initially as a stand-up comedian, Brand became widely known through hosting shows such as Big Brother’s Big Mouth and presenting on radio stations like BBC Radio 2 and 6 Music. He later pursued a career in Hollywood, featuring in films including Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him To The Greek. More recently, he has focused on podcasting and resides in Florida, United States
