Ex-Met Police officer on trial accused of rape

During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Tyrrell made a phone call in which he denied any sexual activity had taken place. He is also charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice by trying to delete messages exchanged between him and the woman. One message he sent included an apology in which he referred to himself as “a sex offender” and expressed regret for ruining her life. When the woman asked him not to say such things, he confirmed their truth.

The prosecution’s case alleges that Tyrrell raped the woman by engaging in sexual intercourse with her despite her repeated refusals. Following one such incident, he is said to have asked if she understood that what he had done constituted rape. According to the prosecutor, Farrelly, Tyrrell apparently admitted that he would report himself and that he expected to go to prison for his actions. The woman further claims that she woke on multiple occasions to find him penetrating her, even though she had refused sex the night before.

In one instance described during the trial, when the woman confronted Tyrrell and asked what had happened, he reportedly responded by shouting and warning her about the possible consequences of her accusations. The victim kept a detailed list of incidents involving Tyrrell, which included the alleged sexual assaults. During a police interview, she expressed feeling pressured by him and confessing fears that she would not be believed, partly due to the lack of tangible proof. She was also concerned that as a police officer, Tyrrell might receive preferential treatment.

After his arrest, Tyrrell denied ever having engaged in sexual activity with the woman. He has admitted to misconduct in public office and has pleaded guilty to a separate charge of perverting the course of justice, which involved influencing the woman to lie to police about the reasons for his presence in her bedroom. The trial is ongoing
