Rebecca Howard’s artwork offers a vivid portrayal of a rewilding Britain, showcasing an evolving landscape where nature is reclaiming its space. Her ongoing exhibition at Knepp highlights nine distinct projects dedicated to restoring wildlife habitats that had been lost or degraded. Visitors still have the opportunity to experience this unique collection celebrating efforts to revive the natural world.
Throughout the past year, Howard has painted scenes from various locations across the UK, including the resurgence of saltmarsh along the Ribble estuary in England’s northwest, ancient oaks flourishing within one of Britain’s temperate rainforests in Cornwall, and other areas where land management practices are nurturing wildlife returns. Her exhibition, titled *A Year in the Wild*, captures diverse projects such as beaver reintroductions in Devon, turtle dove conservation in Somerset, wildflower meadows in Yorkshire, and saltmarsh regeneration in Lancashire. Howard explains that these different sites are united by their shared mission “to bring back abundance of wildlife.”
Reflecting on her experience, Howard expressed admiration for those dedicated to land restoration, describing herself as being “in awe” of their commitment. At Moor Barton in Devon, one particular painting depicts a felled larch tree adorned with porcelain mushrooms, inspired by what she called the “beauty of life coming from decay.” She also shared a memorable encounter at Broughton Sanctuary in Yorkshire, where she saw a merlin soaring across her path. She remarked that such moments, featuring animals and birds rarely seen elsewhere, “just aren’t possible in many places.”
The exhibition runs until Sunday, 18 October, at the Knepp estate in Sussex, a site well-known for its own pioneering rewilding initiatives. Alongside showcasing her paintings, Howard is offering cards and limited-edition prints, with proceeds benefiting the charity Rewilding Britain. As Howard summarized, “Either through species reintroduction or careful land management, there is nothing more beautiful than visiting a place which is teeming with life.”
