The Metropolitan Police have arrested five individuals on suspicion of inciting racial hatred during a protest held outside the Camden office of the Board of Deputies of British Jews in north London. The police described the gathering as a “spontaneous protest” that took place near the headquarters of the UK’s largest Jewish community organisation.
According to the Metropolitan Police, the demonstrators chanted slogans including calls for an “intifada.” Those arrested are currently being held in police custody. This event coincided with several other pro-Palestinian student demonstrations across London, marking three years since the Hamas attack on Israel on 7 October. That assault resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and the abduction of 251 hostages by the militant group. In retaliation, Israel launched a military operation in Gaza, which the Hamas-run health ministry reports has claimed over 74,000 Palestinian lives.
Following the arrests, the Board of Deputies released a statement affirming that the community “would not be threatened or intimidated” and expressed gratitude to the police for their prompt actions. The term “intifada,” used during the protest and historically associated with the Palestinian uprising against Israeli control starting in 1987, has differing interpretations. Jewish groups view it as a call for violent action against Jewish people, whereas pro-Palestinian advocates characterize it as a call for non-violent resistance against Israeli occupation.
Later on the same day, the Board of Deputies planned to hold a vigil at Richmond Terrace near Whitehall in central London.
