Aberdare chapel from 19th Century goes for auction for £1

An auction is set to offer a 19th-century revivalist chapel with an exceptionally low guide price of just £1. This historic Grade II listed Ebenezer Chapel, once capable of accommodating up to 900 congregants, features distinctive architectural elements such as long curved pews and tall arched windows. Despite its grandeur, the building has not been in use since 2009 and has since fallen into a state of neglect and overgrowth.

Located in Aberdare, within Rhondda Cynon Taf, the chapel is described by Paul Fosh Auctions as a substantial detached property. While there had been some partial renovations carried out in the past, the planning permission to convert the site into five separate flats has now expired, leaving the building’s future uncertain.

Sean Roper, the auctioneer, highlighted the property’s appeal, noting it comes with a domestic-sized single garage and is situated in the desirable area of Trecynon. The chapel’s impressive size and notable location make it an intriguing opportunity despite its current dilapidated condition.

The Ebenezer Chapel thus presents a unique prospect for buyers interested in historic buildings and redevelopment projects, though any plans will likely require obtaining fresh permissions given the expiry of previous approvals
