Welsh Tory leader Darren Millar criticises FM for independence push

In a speech obtained by BBC Wales, Millar emphasized the importance of the Welsh government prioritizing improvements to public services while also protecting the unity of the United Kingdom. He asserted that his party is committed to preventing any breakup of the union between the four nations. Millar warned that creating a division between Wales and the rest of the UK would ultimately be detrimental to the wellbeing of future generations.

Highlighting current challenges, Millar drew attention to the increasing NHS waiting lists and claimed that Welsh businesses have faced continued difficulties since Plaid Cymru took power. He criticized Rhun ap Iorwerth for allegedly aligning too closely with the SNP and Sinn Fein, referring to a recent meeting held in Cardiff among leaders from Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. Millar condemned this alliance, stating that ap Iorwerth had signed an agreement aimed at promoting the fragmentation of the United Kingdom.

Millar also noted that the meeting attracted international attention, mentioning that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov publicly supported the idea of independence referendums throughout the UK on Russian television. Addressing ap Iorwerth directly, Millar urged him to concentrate on governing effectively rather than pushing for independence. He accused ap Iorwerth of misleading voters by denying an independence agenda during the Senedd elections, likening him to the “Pied Piper of Hamelin” for attempting to deceive the public.

Describing the UK as more than just a political union, Millar celebrated the shared history and achievements of its constituent nations. He recalled their joint efforts in industry development, abolition of the slave trade, European liberation, and contributions to shaping the modern world. He characterized the UK as a family of nations whose people have long lived, worked, and traded together. While acknowledging that some left-wing voices call for regret over the past, Millar encouraged pride in this heritage as a source of inspiration for future generations
