Sir Kevin Sinfield has successfully completed his latest endurance feat, a tribute dedicated to raising funds for motor neurone disease (MND) in honour of his late friend and former teammate Rob Burrow, who passed away in 2024. Over the span of seven consecutive days, Sinfield tackled seven ultramarathons, ultimately finishing at Old Trafford Stadium in Manchester just before the Super League Grand Final. Since initiating this annual challenge in 2020, Sinfield and his team have collectively raised over £13 million in support of the MND community.
The final stage of this intense week-long event, named “7 in 7: The Grand Finale,” saw Sinfield carry the Super League Grand Final trophy into Old Trafford ahead of the match between Warrington Wolves and Wakefield Trinity. Sinfield started this journey on September 27 in Hull, making stops at all twelve Super League clubs throughout his route. Addressing the gathered crowd after completing the challenge, he remarked, “The rugby league community has got right behind the MND community and Rob would be so proud to see how you’ve supported and cared, and showed your love for a community that really needs us.”
During the challenge, Sinfield received unexpected visits from notable personalities including The Prince and Princess of Wales, The Princess Royal, former England football manager Sir Gareth Southgate, and Leeds boxer Josh Warrington. Each day’s run was structured into 7-kilometer segments lasting about an hour each, with an added mile inviting members of the MND community to join in. The money raised will be donated to several organizations dedicated to MND, such as the MND Association, Leeds Hospitals Charity, My Name5 Doddie Foundation, Darby Rimmer Foundation, MND Scotland, and the Irish MND Association.
Kevin Sinfield, now 45, spent his entire professional rugby league career with the Leeds Rhinos, becoming one of the game’s most decorated players. He and Rob Burrow first met as teenagers in the Leeds Rhinos academy and highlighted their partnership by winning seven titles together. Lindsey Burrow, Rob’s widow, told BBC Radio 4’s PM program that her husband “would have been incredibly proud” of Sinfield’s efforts. She described the occasion as bittersweet, saying, “Rob will be with us in spirit and it’s just testimony to Kevin that he’s so humbled to do this not just for Rob but for the whole MND community.” Adding to the emotional significance of the event, Sinfield’s son Jack took to the field for Wakefield that same week, aiming to secure their first top-flight championship since 1968
