A 40-year-old man was fatally shot during what police have described as a “senseless act of violence” at a memorial service in west London, where approximately 50 people, including children, had gathered. The Metropolitan Police launched a murder investigation following the incident, which occurred at the intersection of Braybrook Street and Erconwald Street in East Acton.
Authorities were alerted at 19:47 GMT on Friday after witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots. Emergency services, including police officers and the London Ambulance Service, quickly arrived at the scene. Despite their efforts, the victim was declared dead at the location. The man is believed to have died as a result of a gunshot wound, and a post-mortem examination has been arranged to determine the exact cause of death.
No arrests have been made so far, and a police cordon remains in place on Braybrook Street. Officers are urging anyone who was nearby around the time of the shooting—specifically between 18:00 and 20:00—and who may have witnessed anything unusual to come forward. Detective Chief Inspector Brian Howie, who is heading the inquiry, emphasized the importance of gathering information from witnesses, stating, “Someone knows what happened and we need them to come forward.” He asked the public to report if they saw anyone carrying or hiding weapons, suspicious behavior on bicycles, or vehicles speeding in the area near Wormwood Scrubs playground.
The victim’s family has been informed of the tragedy and is receiving support from specialist police officers during this difficult time. Detective Chief Inspector Howie reiterated that even seemingly minor details, such as photographs, videos, dashcam or doorbell footage, or information shared on social media, could be critical in identifying those responsible for the shooting and helping the police piece together what happened
