Celebrity Traitors: What you need to know ahead of the first show

The second series of *The Celebrity Traitors* is set to return, featuring an impressive lineup of well-known personalities. Among the contestants are Michael Sheen, Jerry Hall, Richard E Grant, Amol Rajan, Bella Ramsey, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Maya Jama, and King Kenny. This year’s edition will include 21 celebrities, two more than last year, and will offer an additional episode in response to the first series’ popularity. The premiere, extended to 75 minutes, will air on Thursday at 20:00 BST, with Claudia Winkleman reprising her role as host of the psychological game.

Participants will compete to win a £100,000 prize for charity, with the final total depending on how well they perform in various challenges despite the underlying suspicion of who may be loyal or deceitful. This diverse group hails from backgrounds in television, film, radio, and YouTube, including journalists, actors, comedians, broadcasters, authors, and musicians. Notable contestants include Amol Rajan, Bella Ramsey, James Acaster, James Blunt, Jerry Hall, Joe Lycett, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Michael Sheen, Miranda Hart, Hannah Fry, Romesh Ranganathan, Ross Kemp, and others.

The show opens with the celebrities arriving at a church, visibly nervous but polite, before heading to Ardross Castle in the Scottish Highlands. Claudia Winkleman then secretly selects the traitors under blindfold, setting the stage for strategic games including a first mission involving diving into a lake. Winkleman described herself as being fully engrossed in the game during filming, monitoring the contestants’ every move and finding it difficult to turn off, often staying up late to watch footage. Ed Gamble, who hosts the accompanying spin-off *Uncloaked*, also spends extensive time watching the recorded moments, even during his own meals.

Contestants have shared their thoughts prior to the show’s launch. Comedian Romesh Ranganathan joked about the unpredictability of alliances, even among close friends like Rob Beckett. James Acaster noted the suspicions likely to fall on the comedians as potential traitors. Bella Ramsey revealed a long-standing passion for similar games, having played versions since childhood. Mathematician Hannah Fry admitted to “toxically competitive” tendencies and analyzing game patterns ahead of time. Meanwhile, Leigh-Anne Pinnock took advice from previous contestant Cat Burns, who warned that tensions can rise significantly in the group but reminded her that it is “just a game.”

The series also serves as a visual tribute to the Scottish Highlands, with sweeping drone shots showcasing the breathtaking surroundings of Ardross Castle near Inverness. Winkleman described the location as “the most beautiful place I’ve ever been in the world” and mentioned plans to return with her family for a holiday. Despite her familiarity with the show, Winkleman laughed off the idea of participating herself, saying, “No, I’m too thick… I think I would just be too awful at it.” The new season will air twice weekly on Thursday and Friday evenings, beginning 1 October at 20:00 BST on BBC One and will be available on iPlayer
