Arkadii Petrov, once a student at Kirkcudbright Academy in Scotland, has tragically lost his life fighting on the front lines in eastern Ukraine. His family moved to Dumfries and Galloway during his teenage years after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Although he settled in Scotland and completed his final year of secondary education there, Petrov chose to return to his home country to join the conflict.
Peter Kormylo, the archivist at the Ukrainian Prisoner of War chapel near Lockerbie where Petrov regularly attended services, spoke of the young man with great respect and sadness. He recalled Petrov as a courteous and serious individual who came to Scotland with his mother and three younger siblings. According to Kormylo, despite the refuge they found in Scotland, Petrov was determined to fulfill what he saw as his patriotic duty by fighting for Ukraine.
Kormylo shared further memories of Petrov, describing him as someone who engaged deeply with his faith and responsibilities. “The last time I remember him being at the chapel I found him, when everyone had gone, sitting in the chapel writing a couple of what looked like letters – but in actual fact were prayers,” he said. He emphasized that Petrov was a thoughtful young man who made a mature and heartfelt choice to return to Ukraine in the hope of contributing to his country’s ultimate victory.
The news of Petrov’s death has resonated deeply within the local Ukrainian community in southern Scotland, which mourns the loss of someone who, despite starting a new life abroad, felt compelled to return to his roots and defend his nation. Anthony Tuffery, rector at Kirkcudbright Academy, expressed the school’s sorrow: “Although he was only at the school for one year to complete his S6 studies, he was a polite, respectful and hardworking young man.” The school extends its condolences to Petrov’s family and friends during this difficult time
