The final investigation file regarding the Grenfell Tower fire has been handed over by the Metropolitan Police to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). This marks the conclusion of the police’s extensive inquiry into the tragic incident.
According to the Metropolitan Police, a total of 20 companies and organisations, along with 54 individuals, could potentially face criminal charges. These charges cover a range of serious offences, including corporate manslaughter, gross negligence manslaughter, breaches of health and safety regulations, fraud and related offences, as well as misconduct in public office.
The Met has characterized the investigation into the North Kensington tower block fire as one of the most complex probes ever conducted by any law enforcement agency in the UK. The devastating fire occurred on 14 June 2017 and was deemed avoidable by a public inquiry held in 2024. Seventy-two lives were lost in the tragedy.
Operation Northleigh, the Met’s dedicated initiative into the fire, has cost £150 million and involved the scrutiny of actions taken by approximately 15,000 people connected to 700 different organisations.
