A water utility company has been penalized with a fine nearing £8 million due to multiple pollution offenses that occurred over a six-year period. These violations were revealed following an Environment Agency investigation into various incidents that happened between 2015 and 2021 across locations in Cornwall—specifically Bodmin, Harlyn, Playing Place, and Polperro—as well as in Plymouth, Devon.
The company pleaded guilty at Plymouth Magistrates Court to 18 charges linked to pollution. Among these, 17 charges involved the illegal discharge of pollutants, such as unauthorized sewage releases. The remaining charge pertained to the failure to implement adequate remedial actions after a malfunction at a sewage pumping station. Ultimately, the firm was fined a total amount of £7,867,733.
In response to the conviction, the water company described the offenses as relating to “historic matters” and emphasized that it had made significant investments in its infrastructure since those incidents occurred. This statement highlights efforts to address and prevent future environmental damage.
