A coroner investigating fatalities linked to the treatment provided by Ian Paterson, a former breast surgeon now serving a prison sentence, has issued a request for families of 106 additional patients to come forward. Currently, inquests are ongoing into the deaths of 70 women to determine whether Paterson’s medical care contributed to their unnatural deaths.
Paterson was convicted in 2017 for wounding patients through unnecessary and poorly performed surgeries, resulting in a 20-year jail term. Judge Richard Foster, overseeing the inquests, recently learned of 106 more patients who had been treated by Paterson during their lives. However, the medical causes of their deaths have not yet been disclosed to the investigation team.
Among these 106 individuals, which include six men, the names are listed on a dedicated investigation website, with relatives urged to contact Higgs LLP, the solicitors managing the inquests. The law firm explained that their goal is to obtain cause of death information to decide whether these cases warrant further investigation.
Ian Paterson worked for over 14 years in NHS and private hospitals across the West Midlands, specializing in breast cancer treatment. At trial, it was revealed that his method involved leaving some breast tissue intact in order to preserve cleavage, a practice that contravened official medical guidelines. Investigations so far have reported that 106 patients died between 1995 and July 2026. His unregulated “cleavage-sparing” mastectomies often led to the cancer returning, while some patients underwent unnecessary surgeries, with a number discovering years later that they never had cancer at all. The operations inflicted enduring physical and psychological damage; for example, one woman lost the ability to breastfeed her child. Despite these ongoing inquiries, Paterson is scheduled for automatic release halfway through his sentence in 2027, which is expected to occur before the inquests in Birmingham reach their conclusion
