Will.i.am has publicly supported a petition advocating for the return of Sir Tom Jones as a judge on ITV’s The Voice. Earlier this month, Sir Tom himself announced on social media that the network had effectively “fired” him from the show. The Welsh singer, aged 86 and hailing from Treforest, Rhondda Cynon Taf, has been a recurring coach on the singing competition since its launch in 2012.
The petition, initiated by dedicated fan Aaron Howlett from Kingston-upon-Hull, has garnered significant global attention, securing over 63,000 signatures. Aaron, who has admired Sir Tom for more than 40 years, spoke on BBC Radio Wales Breakfast about the singer’s enduring appeal. “Sir Tom is one of the last living legends,” he said. “His voice resonates with so many people, young and old.” Aaron also recalled meeting Sir Tom a decade ago and described him as “incredibly humble.”
Aaron expressed that Sir Tom’s singing is essential to his identity, remarking, “If he stopped singing and performing, then he wouldn’t be Sir Tom anymore.” He pointed to a recent 86th birthday concert in Milwaukee where Sir Tom received a standing ovation, captivating the audience with his presence. Aaron emphasized that Sir Tom remains a key reason why many viewers tune into The Voice. Will.i.am, who has worked alongside Sir Tom as a fellow coach on the show, shared the petition via a Change.org Instagram post, further amplifying its reach. Aaron confessed that he had been “overwhelmed” by the strong public reaction, having initially doubted whether the petition would gain traction.
ITV acknowledged Sir Tom’s long-standing contribution to The Voice, stating their gratitude for the “countless incredible and unforgettable moments” he provided across nine years. A show spokesperson confirmed that although Sir Tom will not continue as a full-time coach for the upcoming 15th series, discussions about his involvement in the next series remain ongoing. Sir Tom criticized the offer of a diminished role, tweeting, “They are offering a much-reduced role where I would make an appearance but without being actually involved from the start, and I’m not thrilled about that.” He added, “So the only thing I know right now is that there’s never a good time to fire an 86-year-old who’s still pretty good at his job.”
Throughout its run, Sir Tom has shared the coaching panel with artists including McFly’s Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones, Will.i.am, Kelly Rowland, Jessie J, Olly Murs, Kylie Minogue, and Rita Ora.
