Fifty-one migrants arrived in Dover early Wednesday morning after spending over 30 hours crossing the sea in a small boat. Their arrival occurred around 00:30 BST, following reports that they might come ashore near Gosport in Hampshire, where hundreds of protesters had gathered the previous evening.
The boat had departed from the Normandy coast on Monday morning, with the French coastguard following closely. Officials described the migrants’ conditions on board as “precarious” but noted that the migrants declined assistance, determined to accept all risks in their attempt to reach the UK. Once British rescue vessels reached the boat, those onboard were transferred into the care of Border Security Command. A government spokesperson emphasized that this unit operates continuously to secure the border, detaining, checking, and processing every arrival by small boat.
According to the French coastguard, the migrants were at sea for more than 33 hours. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) was assigned by HM Coastguard to assist due to safety and health concerns among the passengers. Upon arriving in Dover, migrants were seen disembarking while wearing orange life jackets and carrying personal effects. Meanwhile, Kent Police reported a protest at the port involving approximately 20 individuals, with officers blocking a nearby road. No arrests were made during this gathering.
Ahead of the arrival, it had been expected that the migrants would be brought to the Portsmouth area, following a statement from local MP Dame Caroline Dinenage that the Home Office considered this “increasingly likely.” Protests erupted near Gosport marina Tuesday evening, where hundreds of anti-migrant demonstrators assembled under police supervision. Some members of the crowd, including men in black clothing and face coverings, chanted slogans such as “send them back.” Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary arrested six people after some protesters became hostile toward officers. Those taken into custody included two Salisbury men on suspicion of aggravated trespass, a 67-year-old Gosport man suspected of careless driving and assaulting an emergency worker, and three others from Gosport suspected of assaulting emergency workers.
