An independent watchdog is currently investigating the death of a man who was being pursued by police before he was discovered in the River Lea. Emergency services responded to reports at the High Street and towpath area in Stanstead Abbotts, Hertfordshire, on 14 September around 13:20 BST.
Police officers had been chasing the individual on foot after identifying him as wanted in connection with two robbery offenses. However, officers lost sight of the man when he entered the water. Following the incident, Hertfordshire Constabulary referred the matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which then decided to carry out a formal investigation.
A spokesperson for the police said, “We are assisting the IOPC with its enquiries, and it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.” Meanwhile, an IOPC representative confirmed that officers had attempted to stop the man on the High Street. The man was subsequently found in the river and pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation is still in its early phases, and the man’s family will be kept informed as it progresses
