Newport has become a significant hub for semiconductor enterprises, with IQE operating there since 1988 and the sector continuing to expand. According to a report commissioned by CSconnected and conducted by Cardiff University’s Welsh Economy Research Unit, the compound semiconductor industry in South Wales supported 3,140 jobs in 2025, marking a 14% rise from 2,748 jobs the previous year. Among these positions, 1,914 were direct roles concentrated mainly around Newport and the broader M4 corridor. The report also highlighted that the average salary within this sector was approximately £66,000, significantly higher than the UK median monthly pay of £2,657 (£31,884 per year), as estimated by the Office for National Statistics for August.
A noteworthy development in the region is Bassaleg School in Newport, which has pioneered the introduction of a semiconductor qualification for students interested in entering the industry. Head teacher Victoria Lamb remarked that the course gives pupils insight into a major local industry and emphasized the importance of aligning educational opportunities with community needs. Students like 15-year-old Grace, who described the course as “really good fun,” appreciate the hands-on learning, noting how their perception of semiconductors has evolved beyond thinking of them solely as computer components. Another student, Evan, who is passionate about soldering and robotics, expressed enthusiasm about the sector’s role in his future aspirations and the availability of career opportunities around Newport.
IQE has experienced fluctuations over the past 18 months, particularly concerning investor confidence. CEO Meier acknowledged the challenges faced during this period, stating that the company struggled for relevance initially. However, the recognition of IQE’s crucial role in supporting data center computing powered by AI led to a rapid increase in its share price earlier this year. This financial turnaround enabled the company to eliminate its debts and ramp up recruitment efforts. Despite widespread job cuts in major tech firms like Oracle, Amazon, and Meta due to AI-driven restructuring, Meier praised IQE’s dedicated workforce for their commitment through difficult times, emphasizing that talent remains one of the company’s most valuable assets.
Beyond the semiconductor industry, AI technology is also being applied to assist frontline social and health care workers in the Vale of Glamorgan. Social workers have been trialing Beam Notes, a transcription software that records and summarizes client interactions. Social worker Sian Palmer highlighted how the technology reduces the burden of paperwork without replacing human roles, enhancing their ability to focus on clients. For Palmer, who has dyslexia, the software has eased the stress of maintaining detailed assessments by quickly and accurately gathering necessary information, representing a practical example of AI support improving working conditions in public service roles
