Admiral UK insurance to cut 500 jobs to save £100m

Admiral, a prominent insurer based in the UK, has announced plans to reduce its workforce by 500 positions as part of a broader strategy to save £100 million. These job cuts will impact roughly 5% of the company’s employees and are confined solely to Admiral’s UK insurance operations.

Alistair Hargreaves, the chief executive of Admiral Insurance UK, acknowledged the challenges this decision presents for those affected, stating, “We recognise this will be a difficult time for affected colleagues.” Despite the company’s use of artificial intelligence (AI) in its business practices, the restructuring is not believed to be driven by AI adoption.

The insurer emphasized that the redundancies are intended to enhance the company’s speed and efficiency. Earlier this year, Admiral revealed its goal to reduce costs by £100 million, with these proposed layoffs being a key component of that initiative. Hargreaves reiterated, “These changes are aimed at making us faster and more efficient so we can continue to deliver great customer outcomes.”

Affected employees will be offered “enhanced” redundancy packages and opportunities for redeployment where possible. Additionally, Admiral is investing significantly in support services to help those impacted explore their future options. The Welsh government expressed regret over the announcement, calling the forthcoming redundancies “disappointing,” and confirmed it will arrange a meeting with Admiral to gain clarity on the situation and provide extra assistance to the employees affected
