A British couple, Lindsay and Craig Foreman, have now been detained in Iran for over 20 months without having regular contact reinstated with their family, despite prior assurances. The pair, originating from East Sussex, were sentenced to 10 years in prison on espionage charges, which they have consistently denied. Following the end of their hunger strikes earlier this year, the couple had been promised family contact, but this has not been maintained regularly according to their relatives.
The Foreman family is urging for an urgent meeting with the Foreign Secretary, Ed Miliband, to discuss what further measures can be taken to support Lindsay and Craig. The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has emphasized that the couple’s welfare remains its “top priority” and stated that officials are actively working to provide assistance. Among these efforts have been visits from the ambassador to the prisoners and steps to facilitate phone communications with their family back in the UK.
The hunger strikes began earlier in the year after claims emerged that prison authorities had restricted the couple’s ability to speak with their loved ones. Lindsay and Craig’s strikes lasted 93 and 84 days respectively. In response to the ongoing situation, the family is calling on the government to guarantee regular consular visits and to adopt a focused strategy aimed at securing the couple’s release. A British consular visit is scheduled for 5 October, which will be only the second such visit to the Foremans in 2026, a delay the family finds “extremely concerning.”
Joe Bennett, Lindsay’s son, expressed frustration over the situation: “I understand perfectly well that the British government cannot simply tell the Iranian authorities what to do. I have never expected that.” However, he insists that the government should stand firmly behind its citizens, challenging authorities and following through on any commitments made. Bennett described how the couple ended their hunger strikes with the expectation that regular calls would resume, but instead, the family remains in uncertainty with further delays. He is requesting a meeting with Foreign Secretary Miliband to directly communicate the family’s concerns and to learn what actions are being pursued to bring Lindsay and Craig back to the UK. “After more than 600 days, I do not think that is too much to ask,” he stated
