A man has been sentenced to 13 years in prison following a fatal collision that claimed the life of a devoted mother. Michael Connors caused the death of 47-year-old Lydia La Polla during an attempt to evade police in Wrexham in March 2025 before fleeing to Ireland. He was later extradited under an international warrant to face justice.
At just 28 years old, Connors was driving at 71mph in a 20mph zone moments before the crash occurred. The collision not only resulted in Lydia’s death but also severely injured her husband, Robert La Polla, aged 44, and a 16-year-old girl who was a passenger in Connors’ vehicle. Judge Simon Mills reflected on the tragedy, noting that Lydia’s “excellent life was needlessly cut short at the age of 47, not far from her 25th wedding anniversary.”
During sentencing at Mold Crown Court, Judge Mills described Connors’ actions as both dangerous and selfish. He condemned Connors for fleeing the scene in what he called a “cowardly fashion” and emphasized the ongoing impact of Connors’ conduct, stating, “If the defendant has any sense of decency at all, he will carry the weight of what he did until the end of his days.” The judge also highlighted that Connors was driving without insurance and a valid licence, adding uncertainty about whether he was under the influence of cannabis, though several wraps were found in the vehicle.
Connors, who was on licence at the time, carried out two highly dangerous manoeuvres involving crossing multiple junctions before the collision. Prosecutor David Mainstone detailed how a police officer had been pursuing Connors’ silver Mercedes when it struck Lydia’s Toyota Yaris, causing it to roll over and crash into a wall. The Mercedes was still travelling at 63mph at impact, with three passengers inside. Evidence connected Connors directly to the vehicle through DNA on an airbag and his fingerprint on a can of drink found inside. Robert La Polla’s victim impact statement underscored the devastating consequences of the crash on his family, expressing a profound sense of loss and heartbreak over the absence of his wife in their lives. Connors pleaded guilty to causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving and received, in addition to his prison sentence, an eight-year driving ban with an extended re-test period post-release. It was also noted that Connors had an extensive criminal record, including 64 offences related to driving and insurance violations, along with a prior six-year sentence for conspiracy to burgle in the UK.
