During the early hours of the morning, a fire broke out at the Grand Burstin Hotel in Folkestone, prompting the evacuation of around 280 guests and staff. Kent Fire and Rescue Service responded swiftly, dispatching 26 fire engines to the scene shortly after 1:00 BST. By 8:30, the number of fire engines on site had reduced to 10, as crews focused on extinguishing remaining hotspots within the building.
The origin of the fire is believed to have been in the basement area, though the exact cause remains under investigation. Fortunately, no injuries related to the fire have been reported. In response to the incident, Folkestone and Hythe District Council established a welfare centre at the nearby Three Hills Sports Park to support those displaced by the evacuation.
Local authorities have advised nearby residents to stay clear of the affected area and to keep windows and doors closed as a precautionary measure. The council emphasized their role in assisting the emergency services, stating, “We are supporting all emergency services involved in the response and their efforts to get people to safety.”
