A pioneering service in Liverpool that facilitates easier access to contraception for local residents has recently been honored with a national pharmacy award. The Liverpool Community Pharmacy Implant Service, a collaborative effort involving Liverpool City Council, Axess Sexual Health, and Green Lane Pharmacy, secured the title of Health Initiative of the Year at the C+D Awards 2026. This accolade highlights the program’s effectiveness in enhancing access to long-acting reversible contraception within the community.
Since its inception, the service has carried out 177 implant procedures, offering a convenient and approachable option for obtaining contraceptive implants without the need to travel far. The initiative has been met with very positive feedback from users; every individual who used the service rated the experience as either good or very good. Additionally, nearly one-third of users (32%) had never accessed a contraceptive implant service before, emphasizing the role community pharmacies can play in eliminating obstacles to care and reaching underserved populations.
Councillor Harry Doyle, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Culture, praised the recognition, stating, “This award is fantastic recognition of a service that is making a real difference for Liverpool residents. Access to contraception should be simple, convenient and available in places where people feel comfortable. By offering contraceptive implants through a community pharmacy setting, we have created another trusted and accessible option for people across the city.” He further expressed pride in the dedication of those involved and the positive effect the service is having on the community.
Matt Harvey, who represents the community pharmacy partnership behind the initiative, also shared his thoughts: “Winning this award is a tremendous achievement and a fantastic recognition of what can be achieved when community pharmacies work in partnership to improve access to care. Community pharmacies are often the most accessible healthcare settings for local people, and this project has shown how pharmacy teams can deliver innovative services that improve patient experience and outcomes.” He emphasized how the successful adoption of this care model by local residents and the collaborative efforts of Green Lane Pharmacy and partners contributed to the service’s national recognition.
The Liverpool Community Pharmacy Implant Service began as a pilot program aimed at expanding access to long-acting reversible contraception through community-based pharmacies. By offering this convenient option, the initiative strives to provide greater choice for residents and address health inequalities across Liverpool. Developed by Liverpool City Council, Axess Sexual Health, and Green Lane Pharmacy, it holds the distinction of being the first NHS-commissioned community pharmacy contraceptive implant service in the United Kingdom.
