Human remains uncovered in a woodland area in south-west London following a wildfire have been identified as those of Joanne Sheen, a woman who had been missing since late 2019. Joanne, a mother of three, was last seen on 5 December 2019 when she traveled with a friend from Fareham to Southampton. The discovery was made by a member of the public near Bedfont Lakes Country Park, in an area that had recently been affected by a fire.
The Metropolitan Police were alerted to the remains on 12 August after bones were found in shrubland damaged by a fire the week prior. The initial post-mortem examination estimated the remains belonged to a woman aged between 25 and 45. Following the identification, detectives transferred the case to Hampshire Police. A 56-year-old man from Southampton has been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder and remains in police custody.
Detective Chief Inspector Toby Elcock, of the Major Crime Team, described the investigation as “long and complex,” stating that police had followed over 4,000 lines of inquiry, taken more than 300 witness statements, and conducted detailed searches at numerous addresses and vessels. “While this tragic discovery is not the outcome Joanne’s family, or any of us, had hoped for, we hope the identification of her remains can at least begin to provide some answers after many years of uncertainty,” he said. He also commended Joanne’s family for their strength and dignity throughout the ordeal and emphasized the ongoing commitment to determine the full circumstances surrounding her disappearance.
Joanne Sheen’s case initially sparked a large police investigation after she was reported missing by her family in February 2020, two months after she was last seen. Several arrests related to conspiracy to commit murder took place in 2020, but no charges were filed, leaving the case unresolved until now. Authorities noted that Joanne did not have a fixed address, a vehicle, or a bank account at the time she vanished. Crimestoppers has reinstated a £20,000 reward for information that supports the investigation, and police continue to ask anyone with relevant details to come forward
